Karen Tsuchida, RN III, is a well-versed registered nurse who attends to patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in Los Angeles, California. She serves as Pediatric Registered Nurse and she joined CHLA in 1985. Karen has an impressive professional journey that spans thirty-seven years. Her areas of expertise cover pediatric nursing, surgical care, and orthopedic nursing. Prior to her current endeavors, she was Registered Nurse at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas (1983-1985). “I work on a 32-bed medical-surgical unit, which cares for all levels of acuity and complexity as well as sub-specialty groups of patients seen on our unit. We see all areas of surgical patients, but we are the primary unit that cares for orthopedic patients especially spinal fusions and the neurosurgical patients, i.e., external ventriculostomy drain. Additionally, I provide education for the unit in the form of Skills Labs, Inservices, and Mock Codes. Lastly, I am part of a newly formed In-situ Mock Code Simulation Team and Rolling Refresher,” says Karen about her work at CHLA. Throughout her many years in practice, she has upheld a steadfast commitment to the ethical and professional standards of her work. Karen Tsuchida, RN III, attended Creighton University College of Nursing in Omaha, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1982. She is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Karen remains at the forefront of her challenging field via memberships and affiliations with prestigious professional societies and associations. Hence, she is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association, the National Association Orthopaedic Nurses, and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Karen received a Daisy Award in 2009 and a Certificate of Excellence in 2011 from Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Karen Tsuchida, RN, feels that her success is attributable primarily to her good work ethic, which she has inherited from her parents. “I knew what I wanted to be since I was younger and strived to be that. Fortunately, I had a strong support system in high school and great mentors throughout college and my professional career. The support I have had throughout the years has given me the drive to go forward and succeed”, she said. Outside work, she dedicates to cooking and baking. “My Pediatric Nurse and PMD inspired me. They were very caring and knowledgeable. They could easily communicate with my mother to explain in a way she could understand to put her at ease. During my exams, they would always make me feel comfortable and I would look forward to seeing them again,” says Karen about what made her choose a career in nursing.
